COSMO CITY – Lucky Murovhi, the man dubbed Spiderman, from Cosmo City was sentenced to eight life and 861 years in prison for horrendous crimes he committed over the past few years.

The man who is dubbed ‘Spiderman’ in Cosmo City, was sentenced to eight life and 861 years imprisonment by the South Gauteng High Court sitting in Kagiso on 31 July.

Lucky Spiderman Murovhi (29) was allegedly involved in fifty cases, including several robberies, housebreakings, arson, possession of unlicensed firearms and multiple counts of rape committed in Honeydew, Booysens, Jeppe, Welbekend, Hammanskraal, Johannesburg Central, Diepkloof and Mondeor.

Murovhi earned the title Spiderman for his ability to scale any high wall to gain entry into the property where he allegedly committed robberies and housebreakings.

According to Gauteng SAPS spokesperson Brigadier Mashadi Selepe the suspects reign of terror spanned from 2008 until 2012, when he was arrested and escaped several times from custody.

“He escaped from the Welbekend cells by breaking the wall in the cell. He was re-arrested in Hammanskraal after a shootout, and when he was taken to court; he asked to relieve himself and never returned from the toilet,” she explained.

He was re-arrested again and taken to Johannesburg Prison in 2009 and vanished after using a false name.

“Murovhi was re-arrested in 2010 but erroneously released at Randburg Court on somebody’s name,” said Selepe.

He escaped from the Johannesburg prison in March 2012, but was rearrested in October the same year and placed at a high risk facility.

He allegedly terrorised women who are single mothers or who live on their own. “He forced entry into the house through a door or window, carried a torch or a baton with him and robbed his victims of cell phones, cash and laptops and other valuables,” she concluded. He was found guilty on a total of 62 charges
