Domestic workers warned

KENSINGTON B – Randburg SAPS Sector 1 manager Constable Hlungwane solemnly advised domestic workers to watch out for developing crime trends.

Domestic workers in the Randburg area were warned to look out for crime syndicates that are targeting them.

Sector 1 manager Constable Vincent Hlungwane addressed domestic workers on 29 July at the Scout Hall in Bordeaux, during a domestic watch meeting.

He told the workers to refrain from buying goods and groceries offered at a cheaper price.

“The suspects will convince residents that they can get them their groceries at cheaper prices in the shops,” he explained.

He added that the suspects will then advise residents to leave their belongings such as cellphones with an elderly person at the entrance of the shop.

“They will then go in with their customers into the shop. While they are inside, the suspect will tell their victim that they forgot something, either phone or money outside and instruct them to wait,” Const Hlungwane elaborated.

He indicated that while customers waited inside the shop, the suspect then disappears and when the victims leave, they would no longer find that elderly person whom they had left their belongings with.

He explained that card scams were also on the rise.

He said most of the victims were domestic workers.

“Usually suspects will stand next to the ATM, as if they want to draw money. When an unsuspecting victim arrives, they will offer to swipe the cards. They will then tell them the card is blocked and pretend as if they are calling the bank,” he elaborated.

He also warned residents to watch out for people following them.

“Suspects follow residents from the shopping centres and restaurants to their homes,” Const Hlungwane explained.

He advised residents to be vigilant and watch out for the suspicious activities and report them immediately to the police.

Residents can call the sector number on 071 675 7115, or the shift commander on 082 469 2398 to report suspicious activities.
