Upgraded intersection: Blessing or curse?

BOSKRUIN – CR Swart Drive and Kowie Road intersection has a number of mixed reactions.

The CR Swart Drive, Kowie Road and Puttick Avenue intersection has received a massive make-over.

The notoriously busy intersection bordering Northwold, Sundowner and Boskruin was a nagging issue for motorists for some time. Puttick Avenue resident Mel Naidoo said, “The traffic certainly did not flow. Prior to the upgrade, the traffic was backed up every morning and evening.” Ward 114 councillor Maureen Schneemann said, “We had a meeting with Johannesburg Roads Agency and came up with a plan to alleviate traffic in that area.”

Helgaard Muller, estate manager for the nearby school Curro Aurora, said “As part of the development of the school, we had to upgrade the roads in and around the area.” Curro Holdings Limited did this, but its project still needs to be signed off by JRA as complete. JRA spokesperson Bertha Peter-Scheepers said, “JRA will take over once the construction is completed.”

Ward 101 councillor Ralf Bittkau has a different view on the upgrade. “This is a waste of expenditure,” he said. “CR Swart Drive should have been straightened into the area next to the Boskruin Vet. It would help alleviate the traffic pressure at the traffic lights by Elnita Avenue.”

Schneemann said, “It has been a huge help towards traffic calming, it helps motorists turning into Puttick Avenue.” Resident of Sundowner, Robert West said, “It helps to alleviate traffic stress in the area.” Another added, “The widening of the intersection and the roads have certainly helped to create better flow of traffic, although some of the signage is still a bit confusing.”

Questions were sent to Curro Holding marketing manager Sherlyne Erasmus and comment is awaited.
