Joburg EMS attends all emergency incidents despite strike

JOBURG – Johannesburg Labour Court granted an interdict to stop the unprotected strike.

Joburg Emergency Management Services (EMS) insist that they have officers who are responding to all emergency incidents which might occur in the City of Johannesburg, despite the strike by some of the firefighters.

EMS spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi assured the communities not to panic since it was only a few firefighters who were on strike.

“This will not affect the service delivery to our communities,” Mulauzi said.

He explained they are hoping the strike will end soon.

“We should be able to amicably resolve this matter at the bargaining council since the matter has been referred to arbitration,” said Mulaudzi.

He also said, “We have our officers, volunteers on the ground responding to incidents all the time, so there is no need to panic.”

He elaborated that the department wanted to reassure all the citizens within the City that they are capable of rendering effective emergency management services.

“It is in our best interest to carry out a departmental mandate of saving lives and preserving property in and around Joburg,” he indicated.

He advised residents to call Telkom toll free on 10177 or 011 375 5911 and 112 on their cellphones for any life threatening emergencies.

Mulaudzi concluded that an interdict was granted by the Labour Court to stop the unprotected strike in Johannesburg on 22 July. “Now the focus will be on rendering effective emergency services to all our citizens of the City,” he concluded.
