Gone are the days where an SMS like this would have actually excited the ‘winner’ as it is common knowledge that these are scams wanting your personal details.

All of the messages have a reference number, a cellphone and a phony name to call in order to ‘claim your prize’.

Linden Police operations manager Captain Alex Vermaak said, “These SMSs always surface at some point and a receiver can report it to their local police station.”

SAPS gives a few tips to prevent becoming a victim:

• Never respond to emails or cellphone messages appearing to be from your bank, which request your personal details.

• Remember, that no bank will ever ask you to confirm or update your account details by email.

• Never provide your online ID, password or PIN to anyone and never write them down or share them.

• If it looks too good to be true, it usually is.

Therefore the next time you receive SMSs like these, smile and spend your imaginary money.
