Operation Fiela wipes out crime in communities

JOBURG – Operation Fiela continues to stop criminal activities within various communities in the Gauteng province.

A total of 1 339 suspects were arrested during the weekend as Operation Fiela continues to free communities in Gauteng from criminal activities.

Gauteng provincial SAPS spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said the operation had a positive effect on crime.

“Since the start of the operation in April this year, several crimes like drug dealing and illegal shebeens have been dealt with,” explained Dlamini.

He reckoned that drugs and shebeens were identified as generators of crimes such as murder, assaults and rapes.

“As a result of joint operations with other law enforcement agencies, police have also been able to deal with municipal bylaws,” he explained.

The operation was authorised by President Jacob Zuma in April subsequent the spate of attacks on foreigners.

“Unlicensed firearms and ammunition were recovered and illegal shebeens closed,” he said.

He added that 353 counterfeit DVDs were also confiscated. “Seventy-seven suspects were arrested for being in possession of drugs that includes dagga, cocaine and CAT,” said Lt Col Dlamini.

Suspects arrested for serious crimes appeared in various Magistrates’ Courts on 14 July.
