After denying building a cell mast in Linden, MTN chief technology officer Eben Albertyn confirmed the construction of a cell mast. “The site in question is on a private property and MTN has followed due process and complied with all municipal bylaws in relation to securing building plan approvals and abiding by health and safety standards. The area needs infrastructure in response to service delivery requests as traffic demands in the area have increased,” he said.
MTN initially denied the construction of the mast on Twitter, saying, “MTN has not built any site in this area, it’s still consulting with the residents.”

The mast has stirred up strong opposition from residents, who complain that cell masts are harmful to the body. A petition with 500 signatures was submitted to the City of Joburg, but it was overturned.
