WATCH: Dancing in the park

DELTA PARK – Dancing – dogs show us how it's done!

Dogs may be man’s best friend but for some they are pretty capable dance partners too. Dog Dancing, a sport that involves choreography, dancing and music is a growing sport in South Africa, with two competitions being held in July.

Dog Dancing competitor and international WCFO (World Canine Freestyle Organisation) judge Kathy Clayton explained further, “Dog Dancing competitions are held under the auspices of WCFO, which is based in the USA. Handlers and dogs work their way up the levels and once they gain three qualifications in the advanced class, they get the title of Champion Dog.”

According to Clayton, there are two sections. HTM – Heelwork to Music – where the dog has to work closely to the handler and specific moves such a jumping, or weaving through the handler’s legs, are not allowed. MS – Musical Freestyle – is where anything goes, ”but of course, it has to be done safely for the dog.”

She added, ”As WCFO is an international organisation, that Champion Title is an international qualification. Here in SA we have several dogs with the Champion title.”

The first, Delta Dance, will be held in Delta Park on 12 July. This is a stand-alone competition on the day. Clayton maintained that there is no age limit for participants. Their oldest member is 76 years old and the youngest competitor is in her teens. On 17 July, a second stand-alone competition will take place at WODAC (World of Cats and Dogs) at Gallagher Estates and on 18 July, the SA Dog Dancing Championship will take place at the same venue.

The scores of the competitions throughout the previous year will be collated and the top 12 handlers and dogs will be able to compete. The championship will have three judges – Margie Rutter, Liz Chamberlain and Dutch judge Minna Yrjana. However, the public shouldn’t be put off – there are many people who don’t enter the competitions but will just do it for fun and attend the demos.

Delta Dance on 12 July will feature handlers and dogs competing at all levels. It starts at 9.30am and the public is welcome to come and watch.
