The best… things to do during winter holidays

JOBURG – The City of Joburg has something to offer during the winter holidays.

The winter holidays are looming and what better way to enjoy the long holidays than to have a plan. Here are the best places to visit during the holidays.

• City Sightseeing Johannesburg 3 for 1 Hop on-Hop off fun

City Sightseeing Johannesburg and Soweto has opened their annual 3 for 1 Kids Special where, on weekends, public and school holidays, two kids under the age of 18 can travel for free on the City Sightseeing bus with any paying adult. City Sightseeing Red City tourgoers can connect by hopping onto the shuttle at the City Sightseeing Carlton Centre Stop (Bus Stop 3), where a City Sightseeing staff member will assist with the connection between bus and shuttle. Visitors will then be delivered to the departure point for the Discover Maboneng walking tour which takes place from Thursday to Saturday. Each day this walking tour has a different focus. Thursday’s offering is an Architectural Tour while Friday visits Hidden Gems and Saturday is a Public Art Walk. On Sunday there is no walking tour, but regular shuttles still take place every 30 minutes from the Carlton Centre to take visitors into the heart of Maboneng’s famous market day adventure.

• Celebrate magical family value packages from Disney on Ice

Showtime Management and Feld Entertainment invite audiences to enjoy an amazing family winter school holiday outing from 26 June until 5 July, at the Ticketpro Dome at its new ice extravaganza, ‘Disney On Ice’ which presents ‘Let’s Celebrate’. The audience will have a chance to see about 50 beloved Disney characters including Mickey Mouse, Alice and the Mad Hatter, Lilo and Stitch and many of the Disney Villains and Disney Princesses in a captivating compilation of popular holidays and celebrations from around the globe. You can bring your blanket to keep warm and children are allowed to bring small cushions to place on the seat. However, car seats are not permitted in the auditorium.

• A day spent in the kitchen

If you are dreading the cold weather and you don’t feel like going out then a day spent in the kitchen with parents can be fun, There are many simple children’s recipes to try out that will be quick and allow for some creativity.

Gold Reef City Theme Park

Check out Gold Reef City’s theme park which has planned loads of activities to keep children busy these winter holidays, including amusement park rides, dance and magical shows.

• Holiday Club

Northcliff Union Church will be hosting their holiday club from 6 until 10 July from 8am till 12.30pm. The holiday programme promises fun, music and activities.

James Hall Transport Museum

Youngsters that are fascinated by all things that move can visit the James Hall Museum of Transport during the holidays. It is a wonderful museum that is full of imagination. Parents and their children can enjoy learning more about the history of transport. You will be enthralled and captivated by the carts, cars and buses that people used for over a century.

Entrance to the museum is free.

 Parents can get prehistoric with their kids these winter holidays.

Make a trip to Maropeng’s visitor centre for a prehistoric experience which is a fun and fascinating introduction to the origins of humankind. Children will have the opportunity to learn, and have fun, interactive displays that will help their journey back in time from the start of the universe to the present and possibly beyond. There will also be a fun boat ride to an underground lake that is a journey that explains the formation of our planet.
