Retaliation blazes out of control

KYA SAND - A man is rushed to hospital after his home is set ablaze.

About 20 shacks were burned down on 13 June following an alleged arson attack that was the result of a drunken brawl between two residents of Msawawa Informal Settlement in Kya Sand. According to an eyewitness Nathi Sithole, the two men started fighting on the morning of 12 June. And by 2am on 13 June one of the men involved in the altercation, used petrol as an accelerant and set the other man’s home ablaze, which left the occupant injured and homes destroyed.

“I was sleeping and was woken up by loud voices at around 2am,” said Sithole.

Emergency Management Services (EMS) spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi said 50 adults and 11 children were affected by the fire, however he could not confirm the cause of the fire.

“The guy whose shack was set alight suffered minor burns and was taken to hospital,” said Mulaudzi.

Mulaudzi also said everyone who has been affected by the fire is being housed by the local church while their shacks are being rebuilt.

“Social services helped with the blankets and clothes for those affected. Being winter we are expecting a lot of calls for situations like this, and we would like to advise members of the community to take care when heating their homes,” advised Mulaudzi.
