BLAIRGOWRIE – The Blairgowrie Recreation Centre grooved to the tune of a zumba masterclass.

The Blairgowrie Recreation Centre hosted a zumba masterclass with zumba education specialist Lucas Mthenjane on 8 June.

The masterclass entitled Township Beats was especially created by Mthenjane to incorporate dance styles and beats that are distinctly South African. Mthenjane introduced ‘Township Beats’ for the first time at the recreation centre which he will be hosting in Miami in August.

He explained that the purpose of the class is to get people to know more about zumba and what it entails and all the different rhythms. “This materclass is all to do with African dance and rhythms,” he said.

Mthenjane is set to take his programme to Miami in August, where he will be showcasing at the Annual Zumba Convention. “I am very excited about the opportunity. The convention will have different education specialists sharing different specialties ranging from salsa to merengue, Caribbean heat, to Brazillian carnival,” he said.

Fitness instructor at the Blairgowrie Recreation Centre, Erika Cruywagen was thrilled at the opportunity to have Mthenjane showcase his programme. “It was a fantastic class. We are very fortunate to have Mthenjane present his unique African spin on zumba. We wish him the best of luck on his upcoming venture in the States,” she said.

However, before the master classes started, an unexpected bout of load shedding occurred which left the recreation centre in complete darkness. Hardly deterred by this development, the instructors fetched emergency lights and the zumba session continued.

The masterclass also provided an opportunity to raise funds for a zumba colleague who was diagnosed with breast cancer and the funds collected was transferred to Eastleigh Breast Care Fund. The total amount of funds raised was R800.
