Update: Police confirm former Miss SA robbed

RANDBURG – Honeydew Police confirm that former Miss SA was robbed in Randburg on 6 June.

Former Miss SA, Lorna Potgieter-Rossetti fell victim to crime on 6 June.

Spokesperson for Honeydew Police Warrant Officer Karen Jacobs confirmed that the 52-year-old 1984 pageant winner was indeed robbed.

“I can confirm that a case of robbery with a firearm was opened at the Randburg Police Station and Ms Potgieter-Rossetti is the complainant in this case,” said WO Jacobs.

“It is alleged that the complainant was stationary in her motor vehicle, when two unknown armed suspects approached her, and robbed her of her belongings and then fled on foot.

“SAPS members were alerted and a suspect was arrested in a taxi. The suspect was found in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition,” she said.

Five crime hints from WO Karen Jacobs regarding smash and grabs:

• Be wary of people standing at traffic lights or intersections, (also during peak traffic). They may be innocent but perpetrators mix with these people while waiting for an opportunity to pounce. They may even point to something being wrong with your vehicle to get you to open your window or get out of your vehicle.

• Never open your window or door for any stranger.

• If you encounter obstacles in the road such as rocks or tyres, do not get out of your vehicle to remove them. Immediately reverse and drive off in the opposite direction.

• Don’t have any laptops, bags, cell phones, briefcases or other valuables visible on the seats of the vehicle, at any time.

• Never leave children alone in the vehicle, not even for a moment. Take them with you, wherever you go.
