GALLERY: Battleground South Africa dance competition launch

BLAIRGOWRIE – Hip-hop dancers given the opportunity to compete overseas.

Battleground South Africa launched in style at the Blairgowrie Recreation Centre on 6 June. They held a hip-hop competition where dancers in different genres of hip-hop could come and showcase their talent. “This is going to grow stronger each year. Dance is about the passion and a great way for the youth to express themselves,” said Battleground South Africa organiser Mike Lamfel. He added that dance is a way to keep the youth engaged and away from crime and drugs.

He further explained why a competition like this should be held on South African soil. The aim was to create a platform for dancers in the country to compete and grow on an international level. From popping, locking, breaking; all style battles to junior and varsity crews; open crews and monster crews, the competition gives street dancers from all over South Africa the chance to come together to compete for a chance to represent South Africa at the World Supremacy Battlegrounds Final in Australia. This is the only official qualifying event that allows South African dancers to do so.

The World Supremacy Battlegrounds (WSB) is the biggest and most prestigious international street dance competition in the southern hemisphere.

Hip-hop dancer from the Creed Dance Crew, Homotsang Selone explained that he believes that this competition will allow him to grow in his dance career.

“I am entering this competition for the exposure and to create awareness around the art of dance. I want hip-hop to grow in South Africa. People need to understand it,” said Creed Dance Crew member Theo Mashifana.
