Learn five easy and cost-effect ways of keeping warm.
With the extremely cold days of winter upon us and the constant threat of load shedding we all need ways to keep us warm. Often many conventional ways such as heaters, under-floor heating or electric blankets use much needed electricity. Here are five easy ways to fight the blues this winter.
- Use a hot-water bottle. Some can stay warm for hours; snuggle up with a hot-water bottle in your bed or by your feet.
- Make your own hot bean bag: Use a cotton pillow case or thick cloth. Sew each of the ends leaving a gap at one side insert filling. Use from either, uncooked rice, wheat, oatmeal or cherry pips. Pop your homemade bean bag in the microwave for a minute or two and voilà.
- Purchase double-sided tape and fill in the gaps of drafty windows. This will allow the heating of your home to speed up and also to maintain the warmth.
- The old-fashioned use of blankets and warm clothes will never fail.
- Home-made heaters. Use clay empty plant pots (make sure they have a hole at the bottom). Turn them upside down and place a few tea candles underneath. The heat from the candle flame will heat the clay. In turn the clay will store the heat. (Never leave this home-made heater unattended)
