Warming Johannesburg is the combined aim of the Johannesburg Main Reef Rotary and the Northcliff Rotary Club , said Susanne Govender-Nell of the Johannesburg Main Reef Rotary Club. The clubs held a blanket drive at the Brightwater Commons in Randburg on 30 – 31 May.
“The goal this year, since it is an annual event, is to raise enough to buy 50 000 blankets that could be distributed across Johannesburg,” said Govender-Nell.
According to the president of the Northcliff Rotary Club Paul Westcott, a total of 15 000 blankets were distributed by the two clubs last year. “We managed to get 1 600 blankets pledged at the Brightwater Commons but plan to hold more blanket drives in order to reach our goal,” said Westcott.
“Even though we know it will be a difficult task to cover every cold person in Joburg, and make sure that all those that are in need are warm, it doesn’t matter to us – as long as we are making a difference, one warm person at a time,” added Westcott.
Blankets could be pledged for R60 each at the drives or by contacting either of the two clubs.
Nell urged the community to pledge a blanket to make a difference in someone’s life and help the clubs reach their target.
