Zuma says African Union Anthem compulsory

JOBURG – O Sons and Daughters of Africa, Flesh of the Sun and Flesh of the Sky, Let us make Africa the Tree of Life, Let us all unite and sing together.

President Jacob Zuma said all school pupils in South Africa will have to learn and sing the African Union Anthem.

Zuma made the announcement at an Africa Day event at the University of Pretoria on 24 May.

The Organisation of African Unity (OAU), now known as the African Union (AU), was founded on 25 May 1963. South Africa joined in 1994. Africa Day officially falls on 25 May each year.

According to media reports Zuma said, “On this 21st year of being part of the AU, we must begin a new chapter and formalise the promotion of the AU and our African identity in every aspect of life.”

“Starting today, every school, church, or community choir, and individuals, must practice the African Union anthem, so that we can sing it at all our important gatherings and celebrations. If we start with this generation now, that they sing it and understand it in schools, we would have begun to plant patriotism that will never go away to our citizens.”

He also urged South African institutions and companies to begin flying the African Union flag alongside the National flag, as South Africa continues working with the AU to advance peace and stability on the continent.
