VIDEO: Taxis driving badly

RANDBURG CBD – Popular YouTube video shows taxi drivers contravening the National Road Traffic Act.

Taxi drivers in the Randburg CBD had better behave, because YouTube user Nevarda Wilson might film their traffic sins.

Wilson posted a video on 24 May, first with writing, “Every morning, people ignore people that disobey the laws of our roads.” Then the video showed at least seven taxi drivers driving on the wrong side of the road on Jan Smuts Avenue, in Randburg CBD, narrowly missing oncoming traffic allegedly in the space of 15 minutes. At one point, a car had to stop for a taxi that was reversing into its lane at an intersection, and a taxi travelling in the correct direction had to swerve to avoid a taxi travelling the wrong way.

The video added, “Clearly, this has deadly potential… yet it is ignored. Just ignored. These taxis are risking our lives.” Metro Police spokesperson Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said in a recent article, “Driving on the wrong side of the road is a contravention of the National Road Traffic Act, and will be fined a R1 000. The video has been viewed about 2 800 times so far.
