RANDPARK RIDGE – Pupils from Rand Park High venture into the Drakensberg for a hiking adventure.

The Rand Park High School hiking club, as well as their teachers, headed off to Bergville in the Drakensberg on the weekend of 15 May.

They stayed at Berg Venture; planned their own meals and enjoyed the perfect weather, crisp clean air and a 180 degree view of the Drakensberg each morning. “The hiking club is one of 40 extra-curriculars at our school,” said Heather Robinson, marketing, public relations and communications officer at the school.

The hike started at the Monk’s Cowl visitors’ office, and the pupils hiked along the Sterkspruit River to the top of the Sterkspruit Falls, and then further along the river to Nandi Falls. Here they enjoyed their lunch break and played in the icy water. On the morning of 17 May, they visited a reptile centre, where they spent an informative morning learning more about local wildlife, and handled monitor lizards, tarantulas, a python and other snakes.

Robinson further added, “Our pupils are given the opportunity to gain valuable skills, enjoy the outdoors and tackle the physical challenges required during each hike which, in turn, requires a positive attitude and determination.”
