GALLERY and VIDEO: Spinathon to educate children

MILPARK – Sparrow Schools called upon the community to help raise funds for their 'Educate a Child' programme.

Sparrow Schools Educational Trust hosted their fifth annual Spinathon fundraising event in partnership with Virgin Active Milpark, on 23 May. There were eight one-hour sessions from 7am to 3pm where Sparrow Schools invited companies, celebrities and individuals to spin and donate a R100 to their Educate a Child programme (EAC).

“It does not take that much to have an impact on a child’s life. This programme has the potential to really help a child in need,” said social media manager for Sparrow Schools, Tshepang Thapane.

Spinner Julian described the class as uplifting and awesome, “I just believe that if doing something as simple as spinning can help a child, then really why not?”

Pontsho Moono (DJ Monotone) said, “Anything that is charity-related for me is a go ahead – anything to help the next person without breaking a leg or an arm. When I was called and told that this is for charity and to educate a child, I was more than willing, because education is important to me.”

Spin instructor Salome Makati said that when an initiative promotes the education of a child, it should be supported 100 per cent. “People need to realise that these children will one day be our leader[s] so we need to support them whenever we can,” Makati said.

Sparrow Schools fundraiser and events organiser Precious Mbele explained that many Sparrow pupils are from child-headed households or disadvantaged homes, where parents cannot afford the special education their children need. The EAC programme assists them by providing education and support to children and youth experiencing life and learning difficulties.
