Rainbow line dancer shines

RANDBURG – Leon Nel wins gold at the South African line dance competition.

The 10th South African Masters line dance competition was held on 15 to 16 May at the Portuguese Hall, Durban. Line / solo Dancers from across South Africa gathered for the two-day event and competed in various categories and dance sections – duos, quads, team showcases, solo dances and newly choreographed dances. All dancers had to qualify in their regional competition to be able to enter the prestigious annual masters event.

Rainbow Line Dance owner Leon Nel competed in the intermediate section, danced the East Coast swing, waltz and Charleston for which he won a gold medal. He also competed with Ms Cherie Bailey in the senior duo event dancing to the song of Andy Williams – Can’t take my eyes off you – for which they won a silver medal out of 10 couples competing. The dance was choreographed by Leon.

Line dancing is dance steps choreographed to the beat of popular songs – it includes a variety of dance moves such as funk, waltz, rumba, tango and swing. It is a fun way to keep fit (trim) and stimulates the mind.

Nel teaches line dancing at the Roosevelt Park Bowling Club and Blairgowrie Recreation Centre for beginners – all ages welcome! No partner or experience is required.
