GALLERY: Young chefs competition reveals the best

FERNDALE – HTA in-service apprentice Chef of the Year competition showed off the best chefs on 21 May.

Eight qualified young Apprentice Chefs were honoured at the HTA In-Service Apprentice Chef of the Year competition in Ferndale on 21 May.

The finalist were chosen for the competition based on their overall performance and marks over a total of three years.

The cocktail event saw chefs who were representing their training establishments showing off their cuisine.

It was also an event of creativity, filled with tantalising food and beverages that kept guest coming for more. The competition revealed the chefs’ passion in choosing a careers in the kitchen.

President of the South Africa Chefs Association Steve Billingham said the experience of watching the chefs in action was rewarding to see.

“At last, we have home-grown SA culinary leaders, and no doubt, they are our own leaders and head chefs,” he said.

The winner of this year’s competition was foodie Zöe Maseko who managed to impress the judges with her menu.

“I am very happy and shocked. I wasn’t expecting this at all. However, I have been waiting for this for a very long time now,” she said.

She profusely added, “I have been working very hard, and I put in long hours into making sure that I am the best.”

To put the cherry on top, each finalist was awarded with a Goldcrest embroidered chef’s jacket from Chefworks, a Goldcrest branded plate, a professional chef’s knife, snappy chef and MIC products, a Kenwood hand blender and a Kenwood Major for the winner.
