Taxi protest in Cosmo City

COSMO CITY – Metro police say taxi operators are protesting over taxi routes.

Metro Police (JMPD) said that two streets were barricaded in Cosmo City by taxi operators, who are protesting because of taxi routes on 19 May.

The protest has left hundreds of commuters stranded in the area.

“Sierra Leone and South Africa streets were barricaded by taxis. The operators were asked to remove their taxis by JMPD officials and Gauteng traffic police,” said JMPD spokesperson Edna Mamonyane.

According to Mamonyane the taxis have now been moved and the two streets are now open.

“The strike is about taxi routes,” Mamonyane said, adding that there has been no reported violence and the scene is calm.

However, the operators are still there. “Gauteng traffic police and SAPS have been called and will remain on scene to make sure that the situation remains calm,” concluded Mamonyane.

Ward 100 councillor Noni Raphata could not be immediately reached for comment.

Details: JMPD 011 758 9100.
