GALLERY: River banks cleaned

MALANSHOF – The clean-up effort on the river banks in Malanshof was a success.

The river banks in Malanshof nearest to Gertrude Street and Troupant Place were cleaned up by community members from 15 to 17 May.

In a combined effort by concerned resident Priscilla Steyn Cillié and Ward 104 councillor Mike Wood as well as the community, the river banks were cleared of debris. The direct cause of the debris left on the banks and in the river was due to the floods in February this year. “A kind resident donated a ‘big red skip’ valued at over R1 500 to facilitate the removal of the rubbish,” said Cillié.

“It is important to keep the river and its surrounding areas free of litter and refuge as this can possibly cause the river to flood again,” commented Wood.

“All we asked is for each resident to fill up one bag. Lots of hands make dull work fast,” said Cillié. She further added that by 1pm on the first day of the clean-up, a six cubic metre bin was filled. Many residents responded to the call, even if it was only for a short time. Local shops in the area sponsored rolls, boerewors and chakalaka. “I am very proud to see so many residents come to help us. We have been in constant communication with JRA and Pikitup to remove all of this rubbish,” said Wood.
