GALLERY and VIDEO: Rand Park Musical entertains crowds

RANDPARK RIDGE – Rand Park High School entertains local primary schools with their major musical production.

Rand Park High School treated various Grade 6 pupils from surrounding primary schools to a special pre-release performance of their major production Return to the Forbidden Planet on 12 May.

The three schools that were invited to Rand Park Ridge were Weltevreden Park, Randpark Park, and Constansia Kloof primary schools.

The plot of production is a science-fiction interpretation of William Shakespeare’s The Tempest – in which the dialogue has been modified to incorporate modern day references and lively musical numbers from pupils, ranging from the eclectic Good Vibrations to the romantic A Teenager in Love. The acting was top notch as performing pupils comically caught the attention of the audience.

Marketing, public relations, and communications officer at Rand Park High School Heather Robinson explained that the performance served as an opportunity to showcase the school’s cultural facilities and programmes to potential pupils. “This is the second time we have hosted this type of event for the primary school pupils. This musical programme is an integral part of our cultural programme. We have pupils from right through the grades in Rand Park High School who have participated in this major production,” she said.

Robinson continued that the high school has been putting in great effort to deliver a production of high standards “Our pupils have been practicing very hard for the last three months. The school has brilliantly made use of our in-house band Basement 8 providing live music during the production.

Return to The Forbidden Planet is set to run from 14 to 16 May.
