Math champion Caitlyn

RANDPARK – Meet math genius Caitlyn Morgan who shows her peers that maths is not scary.

11-year-old Caitlyn Morgan started her Calculating Mental Arithmetic Tuition (CMATHS) journey in 2011 at her school Weltervreden Park Primary.

According to the CMATHS website, “In the programme, we help children to develop both their left and right brain capabilities. It also heightens the skill level that learners need throughout various learning areas.”

The Randpark resident practices for an hour once per week and during competition times even on Saturdays and holidays.

“I love the challenge. The speed and accuracy that we achieve has given me lots of confidence and just makes me feel good. I am always trying to better my speed,” said Caitlyn Morgan.

She is currently on 6th Kyu in the Mastering Soroban level. In previous competitions she received the Champion of Champions trophy (first place in her category) in last year’s regionals. She was awarded the Champions trophy (second place in her category) in the 2013 National competition.

Department of Basic Education’s spokesperson Elijah Mhlanga commented, “Any initiative that creates excitement around maths is welcomed.” With some reports indicating that South Africa has a low math literacy level, Mhlanga said,” We reject those kinds of

reports as they are not empirically researched. The department has placed a high priority in maths and technology.”

This year Morgan will be competing against 200 children in the 9th National CMATHS competition held in Midrand on 16 May.

Morgan’s father Dion said, “It has helped her maths and other subjects as well. It helps her focus, concentrate and has strengthened her memory. She is not scared of maths.”
