Moms are every day superheroes

NORTH RIDING — Single moms get showered with love ahead of Mother's Day.

The Character Company celebrated single mothers ahead of Mother’s Day on 9 May.

Jaco van Schalkwyk, founder and director of the company, said the idea was to celebrate heroes behind the scenes.

“Moms keep everything together. So we want to spoil and treat you guys. I am very grateful to my mother for all the values that she taught me when I was young and I didn’t necessarily always appreciate that,” he said.

Van Schalkwyk added that mothers are not often appreciated for all they do. Single moms in particular deal with double the parental struggle. “|It does not matter what you do and how great you are, you are not Dad,” he said.

A handful of mothers were treated to tea and sweet treats with a healthy dose of girl talk.

Elmarie van der Merwe from FLSmidth brought cosy blankets for the guests of honour, just in time for the winter season.

The company is a non-profit organisation that works with boys being raised without their dads. They run mentoring programmes and camps to help the boys grow into good men by instilling values including respect, self-discipline, courage and honesty.

With their involvement in the development and well-being of the boys, it is only fitting that the sons and their ‘fathers’ made Mother’s Day presents while the women put their feet up for a change.
