Possible solution for dumping problem

SHARONLEA – Infrared night-vision cameras installed around the perimeter of central Sharonlea

The Central Sharonlea Residents Forum (CSRF) is installing a series of infrared night-vision cameras around the perimeter of central Sharonlea to compliment the recently completed project within the suburb which now consists of 48 specialised surveillance cameras all linked to a 24 hour control room to catch any criminal activity on camera and this includes illegal dumping.

The problem of illegal dumping, primarily building rubble, is becoming a major problem in and around the vicinity of Malibongwe and President Fouche Drive, adjacent to Sharonlea.

CSRF chairman Richard Shuttle said, “After a great response to remove the rubble two weeks ago by the City Council and parks departments (City Parks), on 22 April a truck blatantly dumped bricks on open ground off President Fouche Drive”.

The CSRF was anticipating such a move and rushed to the scene.

According to Shuttle, the truck was chased through North Riding to Bloubosrand where it disappeared into the River Bend informal settlement.

“It had no number plate on the rear so identification was impossible,” he said.

He added,“When the vehicle following it attempted to overtake, the truck veered across the road to prevent identification of the front number plate, if it in fact had one”.

Ward 101 councillor Ralf Bittkau said, “I am very happy they [CSRF] are doing this project. It is costing them a lot of money. They are very proactive and trying to help authorities deal with problems in the area”.
