Elderly men beaten and robbed

RANDPARK-RIDGE – Two elderly men were attacked and robbed at both their homes on 22 April.

A wheelchair-bound man was attacked and robbed in his home in Gardenia Street, Randpark Ridge on 22 April.

The incident took place in broad daylight at around 12pm.

Greg Pearce, member of the Sector 1 CPF, said when they arrived, they found Andrew Lawrence lying on the floor next to his bed.

Pearce said they are not certain about the details of the incident.

“The man couldn’t speak when we got there, so we are waiting for him to speak so that we can establish all the details of the incident.”

Pearce also stated that there was no sign of breaking-in and suspected that it might be someone who knows the victim.

“We found an axe on the floor, which we believe was used to open the man’s safe, because he keeps his cash locked up – they took his money and a laptop.”

Lawrence was taken to Life Wilgeheuwel Hospital.

Meanwhile, an 80-year-old man was also beaten at his house in Kudu Street, Robin Hills, during a robbery.

Operations Manager of Linden Police Captain Alex Vermaak said, “Three suspects entered the house and overpowered the old man who was watching television and one of the suspects was armed. They demanded cash, and left with a laptop and a cellphone.”

The man was taken to Sandton Medical Clinic.
