Leading man Warren

BRYANSTON – Meet the leader of Joburg’s pride – Emirates Lions captain.

Lions Rugby Captain Warren Whiteley shared some moments of his life in the rugby world.

The Bryanston resident has been playing rugby since he was six-years-old. Originally from Durban, Whiteley attended Dirkie Uys and Glenwood high schools. He previously played for the Cell C Sharks.

Since 2010, he has been playing for the Emirates Lions in Super Rugby and the Golden Lions in the Absa Currie Cup and Vodacom Cup. “Playing against my former rugby union is a great motivation to get good results, it makes me a greater player,” he stated.

Whiteley made his debut performance as a flank and is currently playing as eighth-man. In 2013 he was nominated as the captain of the team. His prestigious career brought him much success, ultimately being selected for the Springboks in 2014. “It’s a huge honour to be playing for my province and now for my country. I take it as a great responsibility to be representing both unions,” said Whiteley.

According to Whiteley, all these privileges come at a cost. “It comes with daily pressures as we train early in the morning. Also, I have to worry about the possibility of injuring myself, which is a constant, and can set you back in your career,” he added.

During his breaks, he spends quality time with his wife and child. “To all aspiring rugby players I will say that a true dedication to your sport is a must.”
