Delta Environmental Centre turns 40

BLAIRGOWRIE – Celebrate 40 years with the Delta Environmental Centre.

The Delta Environmental Centre (DEC) is celebrating 40 years of ‘Environmental Education in Action’.

The centre has undergone remarkable transformation from an unused, empty, dilapidated and condemned former sewage treatment plant building in Delta Park into the leading environmental education centre it is today.

Delta’s founder, the late Norman Bloom, registered a Section 21 company that would subsequently enter into a lease with the City of Johannesburg on 24 April l975, and the 40th anniversary of this event is being marked with a variety of special activities at the centre throughout the year.

Delta will host its open day on 23 April, and members of the public are welcome to visit the centre.

There will be various displays and exhibits, as well as a meet-and-greet opportunity with executive officer Di Beeton and her staff.

“I am pleased to report that we have continued to build on the work that was started by the original founding chairman. We have continued to expand the environmental education and training considerably over the past 40 years,” said Beeton.

The next event in the series building up to the open day will be a Rand Water Water Wise presentation on 19 April. Film producer Wim Spronk will give a Nature and Video talk on 24 May.

A 40th anniversary edition of the centre’s newsletter Deltalk is currently being published.
