Traffic light mysteriously stops working

RANDBURG – JRA unaware of traffic lights that stopped working but will launch a further investigation into the matter.

A traffic light on the corner of President Fouché and Malibongwe drives caused chaos when it stopped working during the last week of March.

Alma Peterson, a motorist, said she had two close encounters during 25 and 26 March.

“I try to avoid using the road during peak hours. So, I was driving toward Olivedale coming from the direction of Sonneglans, when I had to cross this intersection.”

She explained that the lights were all out and she had to use it as a four-way stop.

Peterson added, “Motorists, especially in Johannesburg, fail to comprehend how four-way stops work and generally, when one car crosses, an entire fleet of cars follows the one in front.”

She added it was her turn to cross the road when a bakkie came flying over and narrowly missed her.

“The man in the bakkie missed me by centimetres.”

Peterson further explained that the same thing happened on the second occasion.

The Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) mentioned that they received complaints about the traffic light that was not functioning properly, but said that according to them, the light never stopped working.

JRA spokesperson Mosa Makhalima said, “The traffic lights on all four corners are still working and according to us, they were never off. We will however launch a further investigation into what happened on those two days and will revert as soon as we have more details.”

Details: JRA 011 298 5001.
