VIDEO: Randburg’s rising star

RANDBURG – She has about 50 tracks under her belt, young and arguably one of the most talented female rap artists South Africa will ever see.

The 18-year-old tattoo lover is not just in love with music but is obsessed with keeping her hair looking more than perfect, a hip-hop dancer and a huge soccer fan that loves to laugh.

Meet Randburg’s MegMafia.

What inspires your lyrics?

My lyrics are inspired by what I’m constantly surrounded by and what I am exposed to as well as the youth due to the fact that they are my target market at the moment. My lyrics are also based on my past, current lifestyle and future ventures.

Why did you decide to rap?

Before I began my rap journey, I had started off singing, which at the time I believed was my calling but I felt like I couldn’t express myself entirely and rap gave me that opportunity to do so. Now it’s just a matter of mastering my craft.

When did you start loving music?

Music has been a part of my life ever since I knew how to talk.

Why should people follow your career?

I would like to share my views and messages with a wide audience and give people – whether they’re in their teens or adulthood – an opportunity to hear what is hardly said from a female MC’s perspective in the century we currently live in.

Is the hip-hop industry more difficult to penetrate than other genres?

The hip-hop industry is getting easier to penetrate because it doesn’t just symbolise ‘street life’ and the people are learning that more and more which is allowing hip hop to receive more credibility as well as being more acceptable.

As a female in the industry, do you feel like you are treated any different than others?

Treated differently – no. Looked at differently – yes. As a woman in a male-dominated industry – being underestimated is the norm. This pushes me to succeed just a little bit more.

Where to from here?

From here on out there’s no other option but up. I plan on dropping more singles, doing collaborations, features, possibly another mixtape and only time will determine when I drop my album.
