GALLERY: Domestic workers learn their rights

RANDBURG – Know your labour laws for domestic workers, according to the Department of Labour.

Domestic workers in the area of Vandia Gardens Resident’s Association (VGRA) were informed about the labour laws for their profession on 8 April at the Bryanston Park.

Di McCarthy and Donna Sipman of VGRA held a domestic workers’ meeting in order to educate the women and men on their labour rights.

The Department of Labour was represented by inspectors Adelaide Mokhehle and Emmanuel Khabo. Among the committee representatives, Ward 104 councillor Mike Wood and Randburg SAPS Constable Gerry Maluleke were there to share a few words with the domestic workers.

Wood said, “It is right to expect proper pay for them. They are often looking after our children and how can we put a price on a child’s life?”

Const Maluleke warned the domestic workers to be vigilant when drawing money at ATMs and about people trying to enter the house.

According to the representatives of the Department of Labour:

– A domestic worker is entitled to three weeks’ leave per year (15 working days).

– Female workers have four months’ maternity leave.

– They can claim maternity benefits from the Department of Labour.

– They are entitled to 36 sick days over a period of three years.

– They can take five days’ annual family responsibility leave for deceased family members. In the case of sick children, they will need a doctor’s note.

– Overtime is 1.5 times the daily rate and double on public holidays and Sundays.

– The minimum wage is for area A (urban areas) is R10.59 and area B (non-urban areas) R9.30.

– Monthly minimum wage in area A is R2 000.65 and area B R1 812.57.

– Working hours are: Daily hours for one to five days is an average of nine to 12 hours; weekly hours for six to seven days is an average of eight to 12 hours;

30 minutes to one hour lunch break.
