Father-and-daughter team still optimistic

JOBURG – The Coopers have done a 1 000km so far on their Qhubeka Nine Peaks Tour across South Africa.

The father-and-daughter team, Collin and Bianca Cooper are almost halfway through their Nine Peaks Qhubeka Tour, where they are planning to conquer nine of the highest peaks across the country to raise funds for Qhubeka.

According to Bianca, a resident in Randburg, they have managed to raise R7 600 so far for the charity.

“We are aiming to raise enough money for at least five Buffalo bicycles that will be handed over to individuals who earn them through work that they have done to improve their communities, the environment or academics,” explained Cooper.

The team is busy with their 16th day of the route.

Bianca talks about the route from Krugersdorp on day 11 all the way to Phuthaditjhaba.

“Day 11 we woke up in Krugersdorp Game Reserve and we were surrounded by passing game like giraffe, gemsbok, hartebeest and impala. From there on we headed to Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve in search for Toringkop Hill but unfortunately for us, the reserve was closed and we had to take a detour and we tackled a slightly shorter peak called Platberg that was 1 820m high.”

The next day the Coopers travelled from De Deur to Villiers – a distance of 117km.

“The scary part of this route was a bridge crossing from the Vaal to Oranjeville where it occasionally didn’t work out in our favour as the oncoming traffic swerved into the opposite lane at times to avoid potholes,” added Bianca.

Cooper added and said that the rain caught up with them and they had to take a day off to rest before they headed off to Phuthaditjhaba.

“We did 80km on 27 March and 98km on 28 March and we arrived at Phuthaditjhaba on day 15.”
