Sunflower fun run

PRESIDENT RIDGE — Hundreds of residents raise awareness with the 5km Sunflower Fund fun run.

Hundreds of residents started their Sunday at the break of dawn for the Sunflower Fund fun run at Brightwater Commons.

People young and old braved the morning chill to raise money for the organisation and get fit while at it.

One Windsor resident said this year was the first time she participated in the run but said she constantly does charity runs.

The 5km run/walk began at 8am.

Takalani Ramaphosa from the organisation said, “The turnout is great this morning and we are excited to see that so many people came out to support the cause. This is to raise awareness and funds toward the Sunflower Fund and encourage each and every South African to become a donor.”

The Sunflower Fund aims to educate and recruit a viable source of well-informed potential bone marrow stem cell donors, who are ethnically diverse, in their efforts to save the lives of people in need of transplants when suffering from life-threatening blood disorders.

The organisation strives to maintain the associated donor record of the South African Bone Marrow Registry.

Currently, the odds of finding a donor are at 1: 100 000, and the Sunflower Fund aims to expand the registry to at least 100 000 donors.
