GALLERY: Pupils take a walk on the wild side

RADIOKOP – Pupils from Dios Los Ninos went on a unique outing to the Johannesburg Zoo.

Pupils from Dios Los Ninos School were recently treated to a behind-the-scenes tour of the Johannesburg Zoo.

Pupils from Grade 0 to 3 were guided on a tour of the zoo grounds, while Grade 4 to 9 undertook a special tour that guided them behind the scenes of the inner workings of the Johannesburg Zoo.

Principal at Dios los Nimos Leonie de Kock was very excited to have the pupils involved at the tour. “This special tour allows our pupils to go to places that would normally only be reserved for the zoo staff. It’s a very fascinating and enlightening tour. They showed us how much the animals get fed daily and I think that is something that most people never get to know about. It really gives the children that added educational value,” she said.

The pupils and teachers were accompanied by zoo tour guides NK Khangala and Gomotso Makola, who went out of their way to provide visitors with very useful information regarding the zoo animals.

Khangala was very proud to offer an immersive and informative tour to the pupils. “I have done this tour for over four years now. It’s a wonderfully educational experience. Pupils get a bigger perspective of how the zoo works. Most visitors never realise that all of these things happen behind the scenes. It’s a whole new experience for the pupils. It allows them to fall in love with the animals, fall in love with the job of taking care of the animals,” he said.
