In the name of charity

RANDBURG – The Voortrekers and O'Hagan's Rock Cottage raise money for cancer.

Local youth organisation Die Voortrekers partnered with O’Hagan’s Rock Cottage to host a shavathon on 2 March at Laerskool Unika.

All 500 members from the Voortreker organisation were invited to the event, along with members of the general public who wanted to show their support of those affected by cancer.

Before the shavathon kicked off, the National Anthem was sung to show the appreciation the organisation has for South Africa.

Owner of O’Hagan’s Rock Cottage expressed why she wanted to help host the shavathon.

”The reality is everyone knows someone with cancer; I lost my manageress Smiley Simongelie to breast cancer. It is a way of giving back to the community.”

Children from Grade 0 to matric along with their parents either got their heads shaved or spray painted by the O’Hagan’s team.

Marketing manager for the Voortrekers Sonia Williams said the organisation is involved in a lot of charity work and wants to teach the children to participate in the community more – therefore, the shavathon is a way for them to give back.

Group leader of the Voortrekers Tekkies Kotze said, ”It is important to teach kids to support the community. It is not always about us but it is also about others.”

Chairlady of O’Hagan’s Woman’s Club Brenda Stanley, who has had family members affected by cancer, said it is important that younger people also get involved and understand the effects that cancer can have on a family.

Some of the children also shared their opinion about why they wanted to participate in the shavathon.

Here are some of their responses:

Wietske Visser said that it is a fun way to help get money for cancer research.

Helena Steyn answered, ”Collecting money for caner is fun.”

Mia Barnardt expressed her sadness that people with cancer can’t do anything with their hair.”We want to raise money for them so we can help.”

Lachelle Barnard said that her granny had cancer so she knows about the expenses, this is a good cause to support.

R 4611,00 was raised at the shavathon for the Cancer Association of South Africa.
