Shaving for cancer awareness

VICTORY PARK – Cansa recently held a successful shavathon at the Victory Park Shopping Centre.

Smiles, spray cans, and brightly coloured hair was the order of the day after a successful Shavathon that was recently held at the Victory Park Shopping Centre. The event aimed to raise funds and awareness about cancer.

Pupils from the The King’s School Robin Hills volunteered their time at the Shavathon by shaving and colouring hair of people who donated to support the Cancer Association of South Africa (Cansa).

King’s School teacher Sarah Porter was very proud that her pupils could do their part for the community.

“The planning for the event has been going on for some time now, and so far the pupils have managed to do a wonderful job of helping out. This event is a form of community service for the school pupils, which I think is a wonderful initiative,” she said.

Dis-Chem Pharmacies branch manager and organiser of the Shavathon at Victory Park Shopping Centre Pierre Taljaard said he was pleased with the support they received.

“I wouldn’t be able to do all this without the support from my staff, suppliers and fellow store-owners. We have really tried to get the message across by including a lot of sponsors, and by raising the profile of the Shavathon,” he said.

The sponsors and organisations involved at the Shavathon were Dis-Chem Pharmacies , Turbovite, Evox Advanced Nutrition, Biogen, PharmaChoice, Accu-Chek, Slowmag, Filo Frozen Yoghurt, Nativa, and Tei Avon restaurant.

Social media manager at Dis-Chem Pharmacies Chantell Batt said the suppliers and community made a huge difference by contributing toward a noble cause.

“I think this event is an awesome way for the community of Victory Park to come together and make a difference in a very fun and light-hearted way ,” she said.

Chairperson of Ward 99 Ellen Levy, who was representing Ward Councillor Bruce Herbert at the event, was very impressed with the planning that went into the event.

“The Shavathon serves as a wonderful opportunity for the community of Victory Park to come and show their support for cancer awareness,” she said.
