RANDBURG – Justin Serrao chats about his year ahead
South African singer, song writer and performer Justin Serrao, pumped up the vibe at Scrooge Diner in Brightwater Commons on 20 February.
One of the co-owners of Scrooge Diner, Susaane Govender-Nell said, ”Justin is well known, we rather promote our local artists, we[South Africans] must remember that we do have great local artists. Scrooge also wants to give the diner a younger vibe, like a very lounge feeling, have a beer, snack and just chill out.”
Serrao was also part of Idols Top 33 and he said, ”I have learned so much from Idols, it is a great platform for up-and-coming artists.”
He sat down with a Randburg Sun for a quick Q and A session before he took to the stage.
Tell us what are your plans for 2015?
”I am busy recording my new single called Sucker. I am working with Dale Schnettler from Prime Circle and Howie Combrink from WaterShed. The video will be shot on 7 March with a country feel vibe. There is also the UK tour that I am doing with the Parlotones – it all just feels just so unreal.”
”I am releasing an Extended Play [shorter than an album contains about six songs] at the end of 2015, it will be an acoustic country feel.”
”My album can be downloaded for free if you go to my website and join my mailing list.”
How do you write your songs, what motivates you?
All my songs are written out of experience, it is about what I am going through at that moment in my life.
If I could be the hand that reaches out to say that it’s going to be okay, through my music then I am more than happy.
Music can explain things that people cannot say, it’s just when it hits you, you don’t feel the pain.”
What have you always wanted to do but have not gotten to yet?
”I always wanted to own my own restaurant, I love food – it is definitely one of my dreams to own a restaurant .”
What is the best favourite dish that you can prepare?
”Leg of lamb is my favourite dish and any dish that has been prepared for me.”
