Breakdown of the State of the Province Address

JOBURG – Gauteng Premier David Makhura made big announcements during his State of the Province Address at the Gauteng Legislature on 23 February.

Makhura said local government will deal with electricity problem which is negatively impacting the economic hub of the country.

Delivering the State of the Province Address (Sopa) at the Gauteng Legislature on 23 February, Makhura said extra megawats will come from increasing generation capacity of current coal-fired power stations in Tshwane.

“Regarding the City of Joburg’s Kelvin power station. We are confident that 1200 MW will be injected,” he said.

He also stated that they will be installing roof top solar panels for all government buildings.

This will ensure that we have enough power and we and we will be able to save our economy, he said.

On e-tolling, Makhura said the final decision on the new dispensation will be made once the work of the intergovernmental team is completed.

Makhura reassured Gauteng residents that local and national government are working hard to ensure that the recommendations by the panel works better.

Last year an advisory panel was established to look into the impact of the project.

“The panel makes it clear that in its current form, the system needs to be reviewed to address mainly affordability by low and middle income motorists and administrative simplicity, while the user pay principle is reaffirmed,” he said.

He also said he is confident that the new dispensation should provide major financial relief to motorists, while simplifying the payment system to make it easy for road users to pay.

During the address, members of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) kept rising on point of orders, interrupting the premier.

EFF’s Mandisa Mashego labelled the premier a liar and said he should not make promises that he can’t keep. Another member accused the premier of delivering false information.

“The premier is not allowed to read out a string of empty promises and lie,” the EFF member said.
