RAs and homeowners convene

BOSKRUIN – Resident and homeowner associations share tips.

Representatives of 14 resident’s and homeowner’s associations convened for a first-of-its-kind meeting at The Barn Christian Fellowship, Boskruin, on 16 February.

Ward 101 councillor Ralf Bittkau organised the meeting for the associations, which were mostly based in his Ward, to help one another by sharing advice on how to solve issues in their areas.

Common problems that were discussed were crime, servitudes, grass cutting, booms, closing off roads, and soil erosion next to rivers.

Central Sharonlea Resident’s Forum Chairperson Richard Shuttle discussed how his association had been so successful in reducing crime.

“In the last five years we have spent a lot of money on cameras,” he said. “We got surveillance and an operations room. Now we only have five incidents per year.”

Shuttle added that other strategies include keeping grass short in the area, installing security beams, and having connections in the police.

Randpark Ridge Village Association chairperson Phil Culham advised associations to consider their whole area before closing off a road.

This, because doing so, would affect traffic flow and crime. Bittkau said that another meeting will be held on 16 March, and also invited the associations to attend the monthly Honeydew Sector 1 Community Policing Forum meetings.
