Overwhelming care for flood victims

RANDBURG – Community rallies to support residents who lost everything.

The worst-affected victims of the recent flooding in Randburg, are being cared for by the community.

The hardest hit area was next to the Klein Jukskei River, in Fontainebleau, Randpark Ridge and Malanshof, where 10 houses were flooded.

So far, Ward 104 councillor Mike Wood and Malanshof resident Priscilla Cillié, have rallied the community together to donate between R20 and R30 000 worth of food and clothing to these residents.

Accommodation was provided to the victims who needed it, and even furniture and beds were donated. RDM Auto Services repaired a couple’s vehicle, Builders Warehouse donated R5 000 and Malanshof Spar donated food. Furthermore, Cillié organised a three-course lunch for flooding victims at Randpark Golf Club on 22 February, which was attended by 22 victims.

“I have been overwhelmed by the support,” said a victim, Rebecca Isherwood. “We have been from losing literally everything to having it back in a matter of days.”

Caroline Meiring agreed. “So many people have been coming to help,” she said.

“There has been an outpouring of kindness I can’t explain. If I didn’t have that kind of support I would have fallen to pieces.”

Cillié said that when she first visited the victims, she burst out crying because of how much the victims had lost.

“People were left without food, clothes, ID books and cars,” she said, concluding that residents were “unbelievable” in their generosity to meet these needs.
