UPDATE- EMS explains response time to fire accident

NORTHWOLD- Johannesburg Emergency Services say that they responded in reasonable time.

Residents have raised questions about the time it took the Emergency Management Services (EMS) to respond to the fire explosion at the Dacey family home in Northwold.

The fire that was caused by a lit candle, left the Daceys with nothing on 14 February.

Spokesperson for Johannesburg EMS Robert Mulaudzi took to Twitter in response to the time that the emergency services took to arrive.

According to Mulaudzi, their records show the first call was received at 9.21 pm and the first engine was sent at 9.22 pm.

”A total of three calls were made to the station one at 9.21pm, 9.22pm and the third one at 9.41pm. Our records show that emergency services arrived on scene at 9.30pm. All engines were sent in 22 –a total of three fire engines were dispatched,” said Mulaudzi.

He added that the time spent between receiving the call and dispatching and arrival to incident was reasonable.

Johannesburg EMS has also issued some candle safety tips:

· Keep candles away from children

· A child should not be left unattended in a room with a candle

· Keep candles, matches and lighters away from the reach of children

· Avoid carrying a lit candle

· A candle should not be used in a confined space
