Diggers Juniors learn from the best

RANDBURG – Former Springbok, and established coach, teach young rugby players.

Young rugby players had a great time when Diggers Junior Rugby kicked its season off with an open day on 14 February.

Former Springbok Dean Hall spoke about how fortunate the players were to be part of a club that has produced about 200 Lions players, and about 20 Springboks.

He added that the players would need discipline and a good work ethic to be successful in rugby.

Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) Vikings Coach Sax Chirwa then helped with training. “The day has been good,” he said.

“The boys are keen and are learning. That is what coaching is about.”

Diggers Junior Rugby Chairperson Sibonginkosi Moyo said that he had invited Hall and Chirwa so that the players could receive “quality experience and oversight, and to mingle with the top brass”.

Moyo added, “We are looking forward to a great season, with our U13 side once again taking part in the renowned KES [King Edward VII School] Easter Rugby festival and the Lions Rugby Union hosting the… Inter-Provincial Tournament (IPT) for the U13 to U18 teams, which will allow our club players to once again be selected to the club’s [Lions] provincial teams.” After training, the players enjoyed boerewors rolls sponsored by the club. The Juniors’ first matches will start in about one month’s time.
