Pregnancy tips from Netcare 911

JOBURG – Do's and dont's during pregnancy.

With pregnancy week in full swing from 9 to 13 February the emergency assistance company Netcare 911 shared some pregnancy awareness tips.

  • Management of Chronic Medical conditions like diabetes, blood pressure or epilepsy is crucial for the health of a mother and her baby’s health. Netcare spokesperson Santi Steinmann added that expectant mothers need to consult their health care provider as soon as they find out that they are pregnant because their medication may need to be adjusted.
  • Hydration is key. “Ensure that you stay hydrated by drinking at least eight glasses of fluid, mostly water, every day. This also helps in preventing urinary tract and bladder infections. Limit tea and coffee intake as they both contain caffeine,” said Steinmann.
  • Importance of a balanced diet. She explained that the mindset that you are eating for two is totally wrong. “Do not eat raw protein such as raw fish and meat, soft cheese and condiments such as homemade mayonnaise or ice-cream. Pregnancy suppresses your immune system, so you’re far more susceptible to contracting serious illnesses from a food.”
  • Keep fit but play it safe. She said, “Exercise during pregnancy is beneficial for both mother and baby. Keeping active helps minimise stiffness and aches and it helps you sleep better.”

Steinmann explained that smoking and alcohol use is a no-no as it may be detrimental to the health of the baby.

“Wearing a seatbelt could save your life as well as your baby’s, so buckle up.”

“Mothers should look after themselves during pregnancy by following these tips and if they have any doubts they can visit their medical practitioner,” concluded Steinmann.
