Get away e-toll

RANDBURG – First e-toll-related case before court.

RANDBURG – According to national media reports, Randburg doctor Dr Stoyan Hristov Stoychev drove his Hyundai i30 with falsified licence plates.

It is alleged that one of its number plates, changed the “C” on the number plate to an “O”, and swapped two of the numbers.

This was a good plan for Stroychev, a resident in Randburg, until it was discovered that a Ford Bantam bakkie with the same number plate was a registered e-toll user.

Stoychev appeared in the Pretoria Magistrates’ Court on 11 February on 1 907 charges, of which 903 are for alleged fraud of R15 000 for the use of false plates.

Traffic officials lay in wait for him on the N1 freeway in Centurion on 2 October last year and caught him red-handed.

The other charges are proposed to be for the transgressions against the National Road Traffic Act and the SA National Roads Agency Limited and National Roads Act.

Stroychev cleverly tied his licence plate on his vehicle with cable ties in order to easily remove the licence plate to avoid paying for e-toll fees.

He is currently out on R10 000 bail.
