‘Allen, would have enjoyed it’

HONEYDEW – Memorial bowls tournament a "phenomenal success".

The Honeydew Bowling Club hosted the final round of its three-week long Allen Lewis-Williams Mixed Pairs Memorial Tournament on 6 February.

The tournament was held in honour of Allen Lewis-Williams, a valued former member of the club who passed away in 2011.

Twenty-eight teams of two competed for monetary prizes as high as R1 500.

A raffle was also held, and about R3 000 was raised for the Blind Bowlers’ Association.

“Allen would have enjoyed it,” said Joss Lewis-Williams, his brother, and major sponsor for the tournament.

“This [club] was his second home. The tournament has been full, which is absolutely marvelous.”

The club’s chairperson Dave Chantry, said that the tournament was “phenomenally successful”, with some provincial bowlers playing and the standard being high.

However, the atmosphere was delightful.

“It has been a fantastic tournament,” said club member Courtenay Hardbottle.

“It was three weeks of incredible fun.”

During the last round, Joss drew attention to a shirt he had mounted on the wall in the club house.

He and his brother had sponsored the men’s shirts at the club, but Allen had passed away before being able to wear one.

Therefore, one shirt was kept in his honour. Belinda Taylor and Wessel van den Berg came in first place.

Geoff Lloyd and Eileen Livesey came second while Ted and Georgie Glanville came third.
