Municipal mayhem on Meteor Road

SUNDOWNER – One problem after another afflicts residents.

Residents are tired of the problems piling up on Meteor Road, Sundowner.

Nola Slater, trustee of the nearby Bally Green complex, emailed the City of Johannesburg on 30 January about the road not having any streetlights, street sign, litter accumulating next to the road, and grass growing too tall next to the road.

She also complained to Metro Police about the litter in December last year, and left a voice mail for Ward 114 councillor Maureen Schneemann in the same month.

But no action has been taken yet by the City, said Slater.

“There are no street lights [so] you walk in the pitch dark,” Slater said. “Women walk on their own. It will take a death or rape before something is done.”

Resident Fiona Greenwood said that she believes that the street is dangerous without street lights, and “that grotty patch of land” adds to the danger.

Janine Riekert, who also resides in the area said, “This area needs a thorough clearing of grass cutting and vegetation cut back. It has not been maintained in over a year.”

Slater started formulating a petition for the City to meet these needs.

In one day, 13 residents signed it, and Slater will continue to press for more signatures.

Questions were sent to Ward 114 councillor Maureen Schneemann, as well as the spokespeople for Metro Police, Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo, City Power, and Johannesburg Roads Agency.

All are yet to comment on the issue.
