Hit-and-run suspect appears in court

RANDBURG – Sanity prevailed when a Diepsloot taxi driver surrendered himself to the police after being on the run for over a week.

The taxi driver (26) who allegedly was involved in a fatal hit-and-run in Diepsloot Extension 4 on 26 January, appeared in the Randburg Magistrates’ Court on 4 February.

The state opposed bail and requested a postponement for further validation of his address and profile.

The case has been postponed to 12 February.

Warrant Officer Daniel Mavimbela, spokesperson for the Station Commander SAPS Diepsloot said, ”The suspect reportedly swerved out of the road and crashed his minibus into a supermarket’s steel door. Two women were trapped between his Toyota Quantum and the door. One victim died on the scene. The other one is still receiving treatment at a local hospital. She is reported to be in a serious condition.”

It is alleged that after the crash, the suspect fled the scene.

He drove to the police station, where he left his minibus without reporting the accident.

The Toyota Quantum that he was driving has since been impounded.

The suspect then surrendered himself to the police on 3 February.

The suspect could be charged with culpable homicide, driving without a licensc, reckless and negligent driving and failing to report an accident.
