Old wounds keep opening for grieving family

RANDPARK RIDGE – Family of deceased Doug Pearce want his killer to take responsibility.

The family of the deceased Doug Pearce want his killer to take responsibility.

Meekahefele Masooa appeared at the South Gauteng High Court on 26 January, accused of murdering Pearce, who was a Randpark Ridge resident and biker, was killed during a road rage incident on Malibongwe Drive, North Riding, on Valentine’s Day last year.

The case was postponed to 11 August, as per an agreement between the State and defence.

Spokesperson for Pearce’s family Bronwyn Ingram said that the family knew the trial was going to take long, but with the anniversary of Pearce’s death looming, the family had hoped for more to happen by now. “We want a result as quickly as possible,” she said. “The first anniversary is soon and every time we go to court old wounds open again.”

She added that the family has decided that whatever sentence Masooa may receive, it will not bring Pearce back, and it would be more important for Masooa to take responsibility for his actions. Masooa pleaded not guilty in February last year, claiming that he had acted in self-defence.
